Your domain name and your hosting are two separate things. The domain is the address people type; the hosting is where your website and email actually live. Pointing the domain at your hosting connects the two.
Option 1: change your nameservers (recommended)
Nameservers tell the internet which company answers questions about your domain. If you set them to Fusionhost’s, your website, email and DNS records are all managed in one place, in your cPanel.
- Find the nameservers in your hosting welcome email. They’re also shown in your client area on your hosting service’s page.
- Log in to the company where your domain is registered. If your domain is registered with us, open it in your client area.
- Find the setting called Nameservers (sometimes “DNS servers”) and choose to use custom nameservers.
- Replace the existing entries with Fusionhost’s nameservers, exactly as written in your welcome email, and save.
Option 2: change individual DNS records
If you want to keep your DNS with another provider, for example because your email is hosted elsewhere, leave the nameservers alone and change only the records for your website:
- An A record for your domain (shown as
@) pointing to your hosting’s IP address. - An A or CNAME record for
wwwpointing to the same place.
Your hosting’s IP address is in your welcome email and in cPanel, under General Information on the right-hand side.
How long does it take?
Changes usually work within a few hours, but can take up to 48 hours to reach every network. During that time some visitors may see the old website and some the new one. That’s normal.
