Changing your website's PHP version

Choose the PHP version your website runs on in cPanel, check which version your software needs, and what to do if your site breaks after a change.

Most websites, including WordPress, run on a programming language called PHP. Newer versions are faster and more secure, but older software sometimes needs an older version. Fusionhost offers several supported PHP versions, and you choose which one each website uses.

  1. Log in to cPanel. You can open it from your client area (choose your hosting service, then Login to cPanel), or go to yourdomain.co.uk/cpanel.
  2. In the Software section, open Select PHP Version or MultiPHP Manager (your account shows one of these).
  3. In MultiPHP Manager, tick the domain you want to change, choose a version from the menu and click Apply. In Select PHP Version, choose the version from the drop-down at the top and click Set as current.
  4. Open your website and check a few pages, including any forms or a checkout.

If something breaks

Switch back to the version you were using before. Your files aren’t changed by switching, so going back is instant. Then update the plugin, theme or software that didn’t like the new version before trying again.
