Straight answers to your hosting questions
Everything people ask us before and after choosing Fusionhost: plans, prices, moving your website, security, backups, support and our green credentials. 94 questions, answered plainly.
Choosing a plan
What is shared web hosting?
Shared hosting means your website lives on a powerful server alongside other customers' websites, so everyone shares the cost of enterprise hardware. It's the most affordable way to run a professional website. With Fusionhost, CloudLinux and CageFS give your account its own ring-fenced share of resources and an isolated file system, so other websites can't slow yours down or see your files.
What makes Fusionhost's hosting different?
Three things. The price you sign up at is the price you renew at. Your website runs on certified 100% renewable electricity in iomart's Central London datacentre. And you deal with real people at an independent British company that has been looking after websites since 1999. Read the three good reasons.
Which plan should I choose?
Choose Starter for a single website such as a portfolio, blog or small business site. Choose Business, our most popular plan, if you run more than one website or want priority support. Choose Pro if you're an agency or need lots of websites and storage. Not sure? Start small: upgrading takes minutes, with no downtime. Or ask us for an honest recommendation.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan later?
Yes. You can move between plans from your client area at any time, and your website stays exactly where it is, so there's no migration and no downtime. When you upgrade, you only pay the difference for the rest of your billing period.
Will my price go up when I renew?
No. Your renewal price is the same as your sign-up price, and that's written into our terms. Many hosts advertise a low first-year price and then raise it sharply at renewal. We don't.
Do you include a free domain?
Not bundled with hosting, and that's deliberate. "Free" domains usually renew at an inflated price in year two. Fusionhost domains are honestly priced from £9.99 a year for .co.uk and .uk, and renew at that same price. You can also keep your domain where it is and simply point it at your Fusionhost hosting. See domain prices.
Do you add VAT to your prices?
No. Fusionhost is not currently VAT registered, so no VAT is added. The price you see is the price you pay.
Is there a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every hosting plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If Fusionhost isn't right for you, we'll refund your hosting fees in full. Domain registrations are excluded because registries don't refund them.
Moving to Fusionhost
How do I move my website to Fusionhost?
Choose a plan and tell us you're switching. Our team copies your website, databases and email across for free, tests everything, and then updates your DNS. Most single-site moves take 24 to 48 hours, and your website stays online throughout. See how switching works.
Will my website go offline while it moves?
No. We build and test a complete copy of your website on our platform while your existing site keeps running. Only when the copy is approved do we point your domain at us, so visitors never see a gap.
What if I'm not technical?
That's fine. Most of our customers aren't. We'll move your existing website for free, WordPress installs in one click, and our knowledge base has step-by-step guides. If you get stuck, raise a ticket and a real person will help.
Technical specifications
Where are your servers located?
In iomart's Central London datacentre in the United Kingdom. Your data stays in the UK, and your website loads quickly for UK visitors.
What uptime can I expect?
We target 99.9% uptime on every hosting plan. Your website runs on enterprise-grade hardware in iomart's Central London datacentre, and planned maintenance is announced in advance on our service status page.
Which PHP versions do you support?
Several supported PHP versions are available, and you can choose the version for each website yourself in cPanel. That's useful when a plugin or an older application needs a particular version. If you need a version you can't see, ask us.
Which databases can I use?
Every plan includes MariaDB/MySQL databases, managed from cPanel with phpMyAdmin. That's what WordPress, WooCommerce, Joomla and most other web applications need.
Can I host WordPress or WooCommerce?
Yes. WordPress installs in one click from cPanel, and WooCommerce runs on any plan. For an online shop we suggest Business or Pro for the extra storage and priority support, or Managed WordPress if you'd rather we handle updates and security for you.
Do you include email hosting?
Yes. Starter includes 10 email accounts, Business 50 and Pro unlimited, all at your own domain. You get webmail in your browser, and you can connect Outlook, Apple Mail or your phone's mail app.
Can I run Node.js, Python or Ruby applications?
Yes. All shared hosting plans support Node.js, Python and Ruby applications alongside PHP, set up from cPanel. Git deployment and SSH aren't available on shared hosting; for those, choose a cloud server.
Do I get SSH access?
Not on shared web hosting plans. If you need SSH or root access, our cloud servers include it. Shared plans do support Node.js, Python and Ruby applications, which you can set up from cPanel.
Which control panel do you use?
Every hosting account includes cPanel, the world's most widely used hosting control panel. From one place you can install WordPress in one click, manage email, files and databases, and control your DNS.
Security and backups
How secure is my hosting?
Every account, including Starter, is protected by Imunify360 malware and intrusion protection, a ConfigServer (CSF) firewall and DDoS Shield. CloudLinux CageFS isolates your account from every other customer, free SSL encrypts your visitors' data, and weekly backups are stored off-site in case you ever need to restore.
How often is my website backed up?
Your account is backed up weekly, and backups are stored off-site, separate from the server your website runs on. That means even a serious server problem can't touch your restore copy. If you need something restored, raise a ticket and we'll handle it.
Support
What kind of support is included?
Personalised help from our British team, all year round, through support tickets in your client area. Business and Pro plans get priority support. You'll always deal with a real person who reads your question properly, not a chatbot.
What's the fastest way to get technical help?
If you're a customer, raise a support ticket from your client area. It goes straight to the people who can fix things, along with your account details, so there's no back-and-forth.
How quickly will you reply?
We usually reply to messages from our contact form the same working day. Support tickets from existing customers go straight to the team who can fix the problem.
Can I ask questions before I buy?
Of course. Use our contact form to ask anything about plans, migrations or what will suit your website. You'll get an honest recommendation, even if that means a smaller plan.
What if I can't find the answer I need?
Contact us or, if you're a customer, raise a ticket. A real person will help, and if the question comes up often, we'll write a guide for it.
Green hosting
Is Fusionhost eco-friendly?
Yes. Our datacentre partner iomart holds an SSE Green Electricity Certificate: 100% renewable electricity from wind and hydro, matched to Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). We also plant native trees with the Woodland Trust. See our green credentials.
Where is your green datacentre?
Your website is hosted in iomart's Central London datacentre in the United Kingdom, which is powered by certified 100% renewable electricity from wind and hydro.
Can I get evidence for my own sustainability reporting?
Yes. Contact us and we'll share the details of our datacentre's renewable electricity certification for your records.
About Fusionhost
Who owns Fusionhost?
Fusionhost is an independent British company, founded in 1999 and based in Plymouth. It has never been sold to a larger hosting group, so the people you deal with are the people who run the company.
Where are you based?
Our team is based in Plymouth, Devon. Your website is hosted in iomart's Central London datacentre.
Has Fusionhost been bought by a bigger company?
No. Many well-known hosting brands now belong to a handful of large groups. Fusionhost has stayed independent since 1999, and that's the plan for the future too.
Why choose Fusionhost over a big hosting brand?
Big brands often win customers with a low first-year price, raise it at renewal and answer support through chatbots. With Fusionhost, your renewal price matches your sign-up price, your website runs on certified renewable energy in London, and you talk to real people at an independent company that has been doing this since 1999.
Privacy and complaints
Do you sell my personal data?
No, never. We only use your details to provide and bill for your services, answer your support requests and meet our legal obligations, in line with UK GDPR.
Does this website use tracking cookies?
No. We use only the essential cookies needed for the client area to work, such as keeping you logged in. There are no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
How do I see, correct or delete my data?
Contact us and we'll help. You have the right to access, correct or request deletion of your personal data at any time.
How quickly will you respond to a complaint?
We acknowledge every complaint within 1 working day, and a named person takes ownership of it. You'll get a full response within 5 working days, or a clear explanation and timescale if it needs longer.
What if I'm not happy with the response?
Ask for your complaint to be escalated to the business owner, who will personally review it and respond within 5 further working days. For .uk domain disputes, Nominet also offers an independent dispute resolution service.
Managed WordPress
What does 'managed' actually mean?
We handle the technical upkeep of WordPress for you: core, theme and plugin updates, security hardening, malware scanning, performance caching and backups. You write content and run your business; we keep the engine running.
Will updates ever break my site?
Our process is designed to prevent exactly that. Every update is applied carefully with a restorable backup behind it — so even in the worst case, we roll back quickly.
Can you move my existing WordPress site?
Yes, free of charge and with no downtime. Our team migrates WordPress sites daily — files, database, email, the lot.
Is managed WordPress faster than normal hosting?
Your site runs on our fast SSD platform with experts keeping it lean: updated software, tuned PHP and no plugin bloat left to rot — the things that actually keep WordPress quick.
Can I still access everything myself?
Of course. You keep full WordPress admin and cPanel access. 'Managed' adds our team on top — it never locks you out.
Reseller hosting
What is reseller hosting?
Reseller hosting lets you sell web hosting under your own brand. We provide the servers, WHM control panel and infrastructure — you create hosting packages, set your own prices and keep the profit.
Is reseller hosting white-label?
Yes, completely. Your customers see your brand, your nameservers and your packages. Fusionhost stays invisible in the background.
Do my customers get cPanel?
Yes — every account you create gets its own full cPanel, and you manage everything through WHM (Web Host Manager).
Can I upgrade as my client base grows?
Absolutely. Move between reseller tiers at any time with no downtime. Your accounts stay exactly where they are.
Who handles support for my customers?
You provide first-line support to your own customers, and our team supports you behind the scenes with any platform or server issues, all year round.
Cloud servers
What's the difference between web hosting and a cloud server?
Web hosting shares server resources between customers and is perfect for most websites. A cloud server gives you dedicated CPU, RAM and storage that's yours alone — ideal for high-traffic sites, applications and full control.
Can I scale my cloud server?
Yes — upgrade CPU, RAM or storage at any time as your needs grow. Scaling takes minutes, not days.
Are cloud servers managed or unmanaged?
Both options are available. Choose unmanaged for full root control, or add our management service and our team will handle updates, security and monitoring for you.
Do cloud servers include backups?
Every cloud server includes automated weekly off-site backups as standard.
Can I run cPanel on a cloud server?
Yes — we can provision your server with cPanel/WHM pre-installed. Licence costs are shown at checkout.
Domains
Are there any hidden fees when my domain renews?
No. The renewal price is the same honest price you paid at registration — no bait-and-switch, no renewal shocks. What you see is what you pay, year after year.
Is WHOIS privacy included?
Yes — free WHOIS privacy protection is included on all eligible domains, keeping your personal details out of the public record at no extra cost.
Can I transfer my existing domain to Fusionhost?
Yes, and it's simple. Unlock your domain at your current registrar, request the transfer code, and start the transfer from our client area. Most transfers complete within 5 days.
Do I get DNS management?
Every domain includes full DNS management — A, CNAME, MX, TXT and more — plus free email forwarding and web forwarding, all managed from your client area.
Do I need hosting to register a domain?
No — you can register a domain on its own. Add hosting whenever you're ready, and everything connects automatically.
Website design
How long does a website take to build?
A starter site is typically live within 2 weeks, a business site within 3–4 weeks, and an online store within 4–6 weeks — depending on how quickly content and feedback come together.
Do I own my website?
Yes, completely. Once your final payment clears, the website, its content and its domain belong to you.
Is hosting included?
Every design package includes 12 months of Fusionhost Business hosting free, worth £99.99. After the first year, hosting continues from just £9.99/mo.
Will my website be accessible and mobile-friendly?
Every site we build is fully responsive and built to WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, so every visitor can use it — on any device.
Can you update my website after launch?
Yes — add a Care Plan from £29/mo and we'll handle content updates, security patches, backups and monitoring so you never have to think about it.
Charity, startup, student and veteran hosting
Who qualifies for free charity hosting?
Any charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, OSCR (Scotland) or the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland. Community Interest Companies (CICs) qualify for 50% off any plan.
Is it really free — what's the catch?
There's no catch. Registered charities get our Business hosting plan (normally £9.99/mo) completely free, for as long as you remain registered. We simply believe organisations doing good shouldn't spend donations on hosting.
What about our charity's domain name?
Domains are charged at our normal honest rates (.org.uk from £9.99/yr) because registries charge us for them — but there's never any markup games or renewal traps.
Can you migrate our existing charity website for free?
Yes — free expert migration applies to charity accounts just like every other account. We'll move your site, email and databases with no downtime.
How do we apply?
Contact us with your registered charity number. We'll verify it against the public register and set up your free hosting, usually within one working day.
Who counts as a startup?
Any UK business incorporated or registered as self-employed within the last 24 months. We'll ask for your incorporation date or HMRC registration when you apply.
How does the 50% discount work?
You get half price on any web hosting plan for your entire first year with us — Business hosting drops from £9.99 to £4.99/mo. After year one, you move to standard honest pricing with no surprises.
Can I combine this with annual billing?
Yes — and it stacks. Pay annually at 50% off and your first year of Business hosting is just £49.99 instead of £119.88 on standard monthly pricing.
What if my startup outgrows its plan?
That's the goal! Upgrade at any time — the 50% discount follows you to the new plan for the rest of your first year.
Do you offer anything beyond hosting for startups?
Yes — ask about startup pricing on our website design packages, and our team is always happy to give honest, jargon-free advice on getting online properly the first time.
Who qualifies for student hosting?
Anyone currently studying at a UK university, college or sixth form. We may ask you to confirm your student status, for example with your academic email address or student ID.
How much does student hosting cost?
Students pay a reduced rate, and veterans pay the same price. You’ll find the current price on our student hosting order page. No VAT is added.
What happens when I graduate?
Congratulations! Your website keeps running. When you’re no longer a student, you can move to one of our standard web hosting plans without moving your website.
Can I host coursework projects and experiments?
That's exactly what it's for. PHP, MySQL, WordPress, static sites — build, break and rebuild as much as you like within our acceptable use policy.
Do I get a domain name?
Domains are separate and honestly priced, from £9.99 a year for .co.uk and .uk, renewing at the same price. See domain prices.
Who qualifies for veteran hosting?
Anyone who has served in the British Armed Forces: Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force or Royal Marines, plus currently serving personnel and reservists. We may ask for proof of service, such as your Veteran Card.
How much does veteran hosting cost?
Veterans pay a reduced rate, the same price as our student hosting. You’ll find the current price on our veteran hosting order page. No VAT is added.
Why does Fusionhost do this?
We're proud to have supported veterans among our customers for years. The transition to civilian life often means starting again — a business, a trade, a new chapter online. Removing one cost is a small way to say thank you.
Does this apply to military spouses and families?
The veteran rate is for people who have served or are serving. If you’re a family member, talk to us — we deal with people, not just policies.
Can veteran-owned businesses get help with a website too?
Yes. Our website design service can build your site, and our team will move any existing website for free.
SilentSurf VPN
What is SilentSurf?
SilentSurf™ is a VPN service from Fusionhost. It encrypts your internet connection so your browsing stays private on any network, from your home broadband to hotel and café Wi-Fi.
Does a VPN slow down my internet?
Modern VPN protocols are extremely efficient. On a typical UK connection you're unlikely to notice any difference in everyday browsing and streaming.
How many devices can I protect?
Up to 10 devices at the same time. You connect using the free, official WireGuard® app, available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.
Do you log my browsing?
No. SilentSurf runs on a network that operates a no-logs policy, so there is no record of the websites you visit.
Why buy a VPN from a hosting company?
Privacy and security are what we work on all day. SilentSurf brings that to your personal browsing, from a British company you can actually talk to, billed through the same client area as your hosting.
Affiliate programme
How much can I earn?
You earn 20% of every hosting payment your referrals make during their first year — refer someone to Business hosting on annual billing and that's £20 from a single link click.
How do I track my referrals and earnings?
Everything runs through the affiliate section of your client area: your unique link, real-time click and signup tracking, and your commission balance.
When and how do I get paid?
Commission is confirmed once a referral passes the 30-day money-back window, and paid monthly — as account credit against your own services, or as a withdrawal once your balance reaches £25.
Who makes a good affiliate?
Web designers and developers who recommend hosting to clients, bloggers and YouTubers covering tech or business, agencies, and honestly anyone whose friends ask them 'what hosting should I use?'
Are there any rules?
Just honest ones: no spam, no misleading claims, no bidding on our brand name in paid search, and disclose your affiliate relationship where the law requires (ASA/CMA guidance in the UK).
Still have a question?
Ask our British team. You'll get a straight answer from a real person, usually the same working day.
