Forgetting to renew a domain name is one of the most common, and most avoidable, ways a business disappears from the internet. Here’s what happens, how long you have, and how to make sure it never happens to you.
What stops working
When a domain expires and isn’t renewed, it stops pointing to your website and email. Visitors see an error or a holding page, and email sent to your address bounces or goes nowhere. Depending on how you pay for things, you might not notice until a customer tells you.
.uk and .co.uk domains
Nominet, which runs .uk domains, gives you a recovery window. Around a month after expiry, an unrenewed domain is suspended, and it’s cancelled and released for anyone to register around 90 days after expiry. Until it’s cancelled, it can normally still be renewed through your registrar.
.com and most other domains
Most generic domains have a grace period after expiry during which they can be renewed at the normal price. After that, there’s usually a redemption period in which the domain can still be recovered, but for a much higher fee. Once that ends, the domain is deleted and released.
Why expired domains get snapped up
A domain that’s been in use has value: links from other websites, search rankings, and people who still type it in. Some companies watch for expiring domains and register them the moment they’re released, either to sell back to the owner or to cash in on the traffic. Recovering a domain from someone else, once they’ve registered it, can be expensive or impossible.
How to make sure it never happens
- Keep your account email address up to date. Renewal reminders go there. This is the number one reason domains expire.
- Renew for longer. Most domains can be registered for several years at a time.
- Turn on automatic renewal where you can, and keep your payment details current.
- Keep your domains in one place, so renewals are easy to see and manage.
